Even if he is, that doesn't mean that he's going to be in the least bit inclined to be tolerant of homosexual acts.  Indeed, he's more likely to be severe on them, reasoning that if he can resist his urges (which the RC Church teaches aren't sinful) and not put them into practise (which in the RC view is sinful) there's no reason why everybody else shouldn't do the same.
I don't go for this division of people into 'gay' and 'straight' anyway.  If sexuality can be thought of as a line between 'gay' and 'straight', I dare say that relatively few of us are at the extreme ends.  I certainly wouldn't think that the Pope's taste for designer footwear is a sufficient reason to shunt him along to the 'gay' end.  It's conceivable that a man may like posh shoes and still be 'straight'...

and there could be a bit of, just a little bit of:

REACTION-FORMATION : The blocking of desire by its opposite.
"Reaction-formation" is the term Freud uses to describe the mechanism whereby the ego reacts to the impulses of the id by creating an antithetical formation that blocks repressed cathexes. For example, someone who feels homosexual desire might repress that desire by turning it into hatred for all homosexuals. See also substitute-formation.   Shocked
